A Brief History Of Movies

1897-Zoo gyroscope (later named Zoopraxiscope) is developed by English photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904). It projects images of a series of photographs on to a screen, in quick succession, creating the illusion of movement.

1881-Etienne Marey (1830-1904), French photographic pioneer, invents a camera, shaped like a gun, which takes pictures on a revolving plate.

1894-Kinetograph (film camera) and Kinetoscope (film viewer) are marketed by Americans Thomas Edison (1847-1931) and W.K.L. Dickinson (1860-1933), using celluloid roll film.

1895-Projection system is invented y French brothers August (1862-1954) and Louis (1864-1948) Lumiere, and publicly demonstrated for the first time in Paris.

1908-Kinemacolour is invented by Englishman George Albert Smith (1864-1959) and demonstrated in London. It uses two colour filters and two reels of film.

1913-Hollywood’s first feature film Squaw Man, is made by American directors Jesse Lasky (1880-1958), Cecil B. De Mille (1881-1989), and Samuel Goldwyn (1879-1974).

1920-First studios in India appear, including Bombay Talkis, Ranjit Film Company, and Prabhat Film Company.

1920s-Picture palaces are at the peak of their popularity, offering moviegoers magic and luxury.

1927-The first “talkie” is The Jazz Singer . The soundtrack to the film is recorded on a disc.

1928-Sound is recorded on to the film itself. The first all-talking picture is The Lights Of New York

1929-First Oscars (Academy Awards) include Emil Jannings (best actor) and Janet Gaynor (best actress).

1932-Techicolor process is perfected and three-colour Techicolor Cameras are developed.

1937-Becky Sharp is the first film to be made entirely in three-strip colour.

1952-Eastman color takes over from Tehicolor. A negative three-color movie is made from which Technicolor or Eastman color prints can be taken

1952 Bawana Devil is te first 3-D film in Natural Vision (a large screen process using natural process).

1953-CinemaScope is developed by Fox Studios. This wide-screen process forces Hollywood to film on locations as sets are harder to hide, The Robe is the first CinemaScope film.
1970-Steady cam is invented. It is a camera that remains completely steady while strapped to freely moving cameraman.

1976-OMNIMAX projection is first demonstrated. OMNIMAX films are shown on a huge dome-like screen that towers above and the audience.
